Choosing clothing sewing patterns

For garment patterns and dressmaking patterns, compare your measurements with the design’s size chart rather than relying on your usual shop size. Check the finished measurements and intended ease, then choose the recommended fabric type. A pattern designed for stretch knit fabric may not work in woven cotton without adjustments.

Check your printable pattern before cutting

Read the instructions for seam allowances, grainlines, notches and cutting quantities. Confirm the required fabric, interfacing and fastenings. A4, US Letter, A0 and layered files are not automatically included with every PDF; the individual listing should state the available formats. Print a test page at the specified scale and measure its test square before printing and assembling the remaining pages.

Start with a manageable project

When choosing basic patterns for sewing, look at the construction steps as well as the finished photograph. A simple accessory can help you practise accurate cutting, straight seams and pressing. For a fitted garment, consider a test version before using your final fabric.
