Bias Tape Calculator
Continuous bias tape is a small sewing miracle: one square of fabric, a few diagonal seams, and you get metres of flexible binding that curves around necklines, armholes and quilt edges without puckering. The question is always the same — how big a square do I need? This calculator answers it from the other direction: enter the square you have and the strip width you want, and it tells you roughly how much bias tape you will get. The maths uses the area of the square divided by the strip width, which matches published continuous-bias charts. The result is an estimate before seam losses, so if you need an exact length for a big project, cut one size up.
How to use it
- Measure your fabric square in centimetres (it must be a true square).
- Enter your bias strip width — 2.5 cm is a good all-round choice.
- Read your tape length in metres and yards.
- Cut, join and press your continuous bias strip as your pattern directs.
Estimate only: the formula is square area ÷ strip width, before seam allowances. The strip width must be smaller than the square side.
