Fabric Yardage Calculator
Nothing stalls a sewing weekend like running out of fabric halfway through a project — or overbuying expensive print you never use. This free calculator works out exactly how much fabric a rectangular panel needs, based on your finished size, your fabric width and your seam allowance. It answers in metres, yards and fat quarters, so you can shop in whatever unit your store uses. It is ideal for quilted pouches, book sleeves, placemats, tote bags and any flat panel project. Remember that patterned fabric with a large repeat, directional prints and pre-washing all need a little extra, so treat the result as your minimum and buy one fat quarter more when the print matters.
How to use it
- Measure your finished panel size (not the cut size) in centimetres.
- Enter your fabric width — standard quilting cotton is about 112 cm (44 in).
- Enter your seam allowance (most LoomVella patterns use 1 cm).
- Read your result instantly — in metres, yards and fat quarters.
Assumes one rectangular panel cut on the straight grain. If your piece is wider than the fabric, the calculator adds extra widths side by side. Fat quarters are counted at 46 × 56 cm each.
