Crochet Hat Increase Calculator
A top-down beanie starts as a flat circle — the crown — and the whole hat depends on getting that circle right. Increase too slowly and it bowls upward; increase too fast and it ruffles like a frill. The rule is simple once you know it: start with 12 stitches, add 12 stitches on every increase round, and stop when the circle is wide enough for the head it must fit. This calculator does that arithmetic from your head measurement and your gauge swatch. It gives you the total crown stitches, how many full increase rounds to work, and whether a final partial round is needed. Pair it with the gauge calculator first if you have not swatched yet — good numbers in, good hat out.
How to use it
- Measure the head around the forehead in centimetres.
- Enter your gauge (stitches per 10 cm) from a swatch.
- Work the increase rounds shown, adding 12 stitches per round.
- Then work the body straight, with no increases, to your hat length.
Model: start 12 stitches, +12 per increase round. A partial final round adds only the stitches still needed, so the crown ends flat at your size.
