Quilt Binding Calculator
Binding is the frame that finishes a quilt — and it is the part most often underestimated. Measure a little short and you are piecing scraps at midnight; measure generously and you waste good fabric. This calculator takes your quilt’s finished length and width and returns the total binding length (including a joining allowance), how many standard strips to cut, and how much fabric that takes. It assumes 6.5 cm (2.5 in) wide strips cut across the full width of standard 112 cm quilting cotton, joined with diagonal seams. It works for quilts, table runners, placemats, mug rugs and any rectangular quilted project, including the quilted pouches and book sleeves in the LoomVella shop.
How to use it
- Enter your quilt’s finished length and width in centimetres.
- Read the total binding length — the joining allowance is already included.
- Cut the number of strips shown, join them diagonally, and press the seams open.
- Fold, pin and stitch your binding as your pattern directs.
Assumes 6.5 cm wide strips cut across 112 cm wide fabric, with 25 cm extra for joins and corners. For bias binding or striped fabric, add one extra strip.
